Newton Playing Cards

Newton: or, a deck of 52 pasteboards for the practice and performance of sleight of hand. Also, a tribute to the father of classical physics.

Wow, now that's a long name for a deck of cards!

This deck comes as an addon with the purchase of Opticks, a video release by Harapan Ong. It comes packaged in a really novel case too which would definitely leave room for conversation with guests.

The unique case the Newton deck comes in.

The tuck is designed on a matte paper that looks like old parchment. The back of it matches the design on the back of the cards themselves, a symmetrical pattern with an apple and the moon orbiting the sun. Inside the tuck you'll find scribbles of physics formulas and Newton's fourth law of motion, specifically the nature and calculation of forces. Interpret that how you will =]

The stock is good and the finish is fine, it handles beautifully right out of the box. The faces are standard Bicycle faces, though things do get interesting beyond that.

The Ace of Spades is, of course, custom and features an apple in a tree and a quote:

Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.
Sir Isaac Newton

There are no Jokers in this deck. Instead, we find a double backer and three gaff cards. My oh my, Harapan Ong spared no expense providing us with some awesome material!

The deck consists of 56 cards:

  • 52 playing cards
  • One double backer
  • One double faced Ace of Hearts / Seven of Spades
  • One double faced Ace of Diamonds / Ace of Spades
  • One mis-pipped Ace of Clubs / Three of Hearts

Where to buy?

The deck isn't sold individually, rather, it comes as an addon to the Opticks package by Harapan Ong
